What I mean is that emotional intelligence goes way deeper than that.

Let me explain and give you an example...

I have heard some people saying "Well, you know, I don't really understand why we have to connect with the prospect and their motivations… I just want the sale and the money."

My answer to this "You need to connect deeply with your prospect because they are a human being with needs to feel understood and to trust you to feel confident enough in their decision to pay you."

Let me take you through this case study

Let's say you are a closer. These are the 3 different levels you can connect with your prospect:

Level 1

Trying to get the money out of them (The focus is on you)

All your speech feels very forceful and needy. You don't really let them speak and express themselves. You don't pay attention to their tone, emotions, even to what they say. You just follow your script to the letter. When it comes to answering their objections, you just answer them in a very straight forward manner. They feel pressured and feel that you want to make the sale at all cost.

What this means

This level of low emotional intelligence is felt very clearly, whether you know it or not, by your interlocutor. This ripples on your reputation and on their final decision. They feel that they are not the center of the conversation and within the first seconds of the call, their decision of not buying into your offer might already have been taken.

Level 2

Evaluating the prospect based on their wallet capacity (The focus is still on you)

You go through the call. You try to qualify the prospect, but your main criteria is whether they have the money or not. You don't feel really at ease with connecting emotionally with the person so you try to get through the deep core motivations questions very quickly, or just don't ask about them at all. You think that if they have the money, then this service is perfect for them (which is how you actually end up with "bad apples").

What this means

This level of connection is still a sign that you are afraid of being vulnerable, intimate with someone and not at ease with human connection and emotions in general.

At the end, if they join or work with you or invest in your company, just because they have the money, you might realize later that their personality doesn't go well with you.

They might not share the same values, interests, motivations than you, and you end up having more complications than satisfactions with this person.

You can understand that selling is exactly like dating. You need to go deeper into the person's inner emotional world to really know if you and your offer are a good fit for them.

Level 3

Connecting with the person and their deeper motivation (The focus is on them)

You want them to make the best decision for them. You want to dive into, explore and understand their own universe. You want to understand their core motivations, doubts, fears, shadow zones, deep why and profound aspirations so that you can evaluate whether or not your offer is right for them.

What this means

This level of connection shows that you are detached from the outcome. You feel very secure, at ease with yourself and very at ease with diving into other people's emotions. You are at ease with vulnerability. You feel that it is easy to open yourself with sincerity to your prospect. You present yourself as a trustworthy person and they can definitely feel it, either through the phone or in person.

Now, let me walk you to the core of what emotional intelligence really is…


Based on our previous case study, you can see that I didn't talk about the techniques to sell, because this is not my job. This is actually the obvious and visible part of selling.
